There are many options available, but the most popular are listed:

  • tax-approved executive / company share option schemes: share options are granted to selected employees to purchase shares at market value at the time of the grant. Employees can exercise their options between the third and tenth anniversaries of the grant date.
  • tax-approved savings-related share option schemes: share options are granted to selected employees at a discount of up to 20% of the their market value at the time of the grant. Employees save to build a fund that is available for the purchase of shares either 3, 5 or 7 years later.
  • enterprise management incentives: share options are granted to selected employees to purchase shares at a price not less than their nominal value. Employees can exercise their options up to the tenth anniversary of the grant date.
  • phantom share option schemes: similar to the real share option scheme except that employees do not actually take title to shares. However, they benefit from any increase in share value, paid out of company funds.
